Enemy at the Gates

without comments

The first part of this movie is fantastic. Red Army troops being forced into the front lines while the Nazis lay waste to Stalingrad is some of the best war scenes since the opening of Saving Private Ryan. Shortly after it is discovered that Jude Law is the best sniper in the world, the Reds assign Hellboy to be his mentor and wing man. Not to be outdone, the Nazis bring in astronaut John Glenn to oppose Law. Much posing and jostling about insues hitting a high point where a turncoat shoeshine boy is left swinging from a lightpost.

I don’t know what the writers of this movie were thinking: 30 minutes of war most excellent followed by an hour and a half of crap only their mothers could love.

Gladiator

without comments

OK, so I’m watching this thing. It doesn’t start getting even remotely interesting until the Spaniard, Russell Crowe, gets to Rome. At that point I have only one question: Why in Hell’s name doesn’t Emperor Commodus just kill the mutha? He’s the fuckin’ Emperor for Christ’s sake! He’s all powerful; he’s the leader of the most powerful nation on Earth. No… He can’t kill the Spaniard. Instead he keeps wandering out into the middle of the Colosseum and sniveling questions like, “Who are you gladiator”. “What’s your favorite color gladiator”, “do you like my new shoes gladiator”.

No wonder they named the commode after Commodus: They are both full of shit.

Guns of Navarone

without comments

Good stuff here. Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn and David Niven set on a World War II classic in 1943. Through turns in the plot the three major players in the movie hate each other and work together to silence the giant guns on Navarone. Most of the Nazis in this movie might as well be old Star Trek ‘red-shirts’, but still the Nazi menace is felt and needs to be stopped.
